TBPeople Philippines Joins Media Orientation on Tuberculosis: ‘Puksain Natin ang TB!’
TBPeople Philippines is proud to have been part of the Media Orientation on Tuberculosis in the Philippines, an important initiative organized by Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF), also known as Doctors Without Borders. With the powerful theme ‘Puksain Natin ang TB!’ (Let’s End TB!), this event served as a platform to enhance awareness, strengthen collaboration, and rally support for the fight against tuberculosis in the country.
The media orientation united key stakeholders, advocates, and media representatives to better understand tuberculosis (TB) as an urgent public health issue. MSF discussed the importance of the role that the media plays in raising awareness and breaking down stigma around TB. Through correct information and compelling stories, the media can help communities understand the importance of treating TB and motivate people to seek early diagnosis, treatment, and prevention.
The orientation gave the opportunity to share stories of resilience, advocacy, and innovation in TB care. TBPeople Philippines President Mrs. Eloisa Zepeda-Teng, who shared her personal life story of overcoming TB, including the challenges faced by patients and the need for strengthened support systems. Mrs. Zepeda-Teng also highlighted the collective experiences of TB survivors, emphasizing the need to break stigma and improve access to care.
Adding to this, Mr. Joegene Mangilaya, TBPeople Philippines Partnership Officer, shared his own personal journey of taking a new TB drug during his treatment. This testimony brought hope and insights in the advancement of treatment options for TB patients and highlighted how innovation can change life for people with drug-resistant TB. And lastly, TBPeople Philippines Media and Campaign Officer Mr. Luisito Tay discussed the use of social media in advocating and raising awareness. According to him, TBPeople Philippines had already been able to use online channels to amplify the voice of TB survivors, disseminate facts, and support towards TB elimination efforts.
With pride, TBPeople Philippines reiterated its commitment to working hand-in-hand with partners such as MSF, government agencies, media organizations, and local communities in addressing the TB problem. It has been using the strength of storytelling, education, and advocacy in pushing for the voice of TB-affected people toward a TB-free future.
With collaborative efforts such as the Media Orientation on Tuberculosis, there is hope for a future where TB no longer claims lives or hinders communities.
